General note on sources

Wherever possible, we use primary sources such as official Song Contest websites, PDFs of printed programs, and recordings or clips of the televised broadcast. These primary sources provide most of the following information:

  • Contest theme and date
  • Song names, and in most cases, arrangers and composers
  • Song directors
  • Judges
  • Award winners
  • Hōʻike theme
  • Competition order

Together, these provide nearly full coverage for all Song Contests since 1971, except for: 1981–1982, 1996, 1998, and 2003. Information for those contests have been derived from a variety of other sources; see below for details.

Other information on the site is derived from various sources, including but not limited to:

Contests before 1970

We have very limited information for Song Contests before 1971, but we are working to expand this data.

In addition, we currently do not provide information for historical features of Song Contest that are no longer part of the program, such as prize songs or the junior division competition. The history of these categories are described briefly on the About Song Contest page.

Scores

From 2015 to 2023, Kamehameha published official scores in news articles shortly after Song Contest ended. Scores were not officially published online before 2015 or in 2024.

Prior to 2015, scores were sourced from the Ka Naʻi Aupuni yearbook, or occasionally from social media, contributions from site visitors, or word-of-mouth. See below for specific details.

Visitor contributions

Much of our information comes from site visitors, who have graciously sent us information that we were missing. Mahalo nui loa to the following people for their contributions!

Sources by contest

Sources highlighted in yellow have not been fully verified for accuracy. Most of these are "unofficial" sources or contributions from site visitors. In many cases, although we haven't verified the entire source, we have been able to independently verify a portion of it, which increases our confidence in its accuracy as a whole. In addition, many of our visitor contributions have come from past song directors.
