Special mass numbers were performed before each competition.
The men from all the classes, including the freshmen, sang "Maikaʻi Ka Makani O Kohala", accompanied by Dennis Kamakahi '71 and son David Kamakahi '98. They were directed by Aaron Akamu '97.
The women from all the classes sang "Makalapua", accompanied by Nā Leo Pilimehana (Nalani Choy '84, Angela Morales '84, Lehua Kalima '84). They were directed by Tara James '97.
The combined classes sang "Pūpū ʻO ʻEwa", accompanied on piano by David Kauahikaua '83. They were directed by Justin Clemente '97.
* From at least the 1960s to 2006, Song Contest numbering was off by 2 years. The 1997 Contest was billed as the "75th Annual", but because the first Song Contest was held in 1921, it should have been the 77th. The numbering was eventually corrected in 2007, and Hoʻokūkū Hīmeni has retroactively applied these corrections to past contests. However, you will see the old, incorrect numbering used in Song Contest publicity materials until 2006.
